Haitian Art

Haitian Painter JoelWithout a doubt, Haitian Art, especially painting and sculpture, is among the most appreciated in the world. It continues to receive critical acclaim while at the same time enjoying some measure of commercial success. Yet, that success comes with a history of controversy, as Haitian artists, local and western critics have dueled over what form of artistic expression is more authentic and therefore worthy of consideration as characteristic Haitian art.

When you see Haitian art for the first time you will immediately notice the raw artistic talent displayed by many untrained and in many cases uneducated painters. Those are people who never went to Art School, workers of all trades, who produce marvels of ingenious art work. These intuitive paintings are characterized by vivid, raw colors, a spatial composition and use of proportions that did not abide by any of the laws of modern aesthetics, but rather revealed spontaneity, freedom of expression and freshness.

Influence of Voudou

Relief SculpturesThe major factor that contributes to the singular vision of Haiti's artists is their inextricable link with Voudou in everyday life. Before Haitian art was 'discovered' the artisans served the loa and the hougans with their talents. Their painted murals decorated the walls of the houmfors (temples), and the elaborate sequin flags were used in the ceremonies to summon the loa.

One of the newest art forms to emerge is metal drum sculpture inspired by the rich mythology of Voudou. In a small dusty town ten miles north-east of the capital, Port-au-Prince, over a dozen different artists are turning old metal oil drums into unique and striking relief sculptures.

The sculptures are representations of mermaids, snakes, dragons, angels, devils, and other beasts that, for the foreigner, defy description. For the artists themselves each piece has a significance or tells a story that, more often than not, is strongly influenced by Voudou.

FactoryWoodcarving

Another example of Haitian art are the marvelous woodcarvings which are typical for the country. They are manufactured by hand in small factories. every piece is unique in its kind and every worker is an artist on its own.

On the left you can see one of the factories in Port-au-Prince, where these small wooden masterpieces are manufactured.

Below we show you how our logo was created in several steps from a simple wooden block over the raw sculpture to the final product.

Not only sculptures, but also domestic tools are manufactured here.  Have a look at the details of the beautiful decorations of every piece. At our handicraft page you can see further examples. Most of them can be purchased directly via our web site.
