Haitian Art
Influence of Voudou
One of the newest art forms to emerge is metal drum sculpture inspired by the rich mythology of Voudou. In a small dusty town ten miles north-east of the capital, Port-au-Prince, over a dozen different artists are turning old metal oil drums into unique and striking relief sculptures. The sculptures are representations of mermaids, snakes, dragons, angels, devils, and other beasts that, for the foreigner, defy description. For the artists themselves each piece has a significance or tells a story that, more often than not, is strongly influenced by Voudou.
Another example of Haitian art are the marvelous woodcarvings which are typical for the country. They are manufactured by hand in small factories. every piece is unique in its kind and every worker is an artist on its own. On the left you can see one of the
factories in Port-au-Prince, where these small wooden masterpieces are
manufactured. Below we show you how our logo was created in several steps from a simple wooden block over the raw sculpture to the final product.
Not only sculptures, but also domestic tools are manufactured here. Have a look at the details of the beautiful decorations of every piece. At our handicraft page you can see further examples. Most of them can be purchased directly via our web site.
